Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai announced his switch to the SDP through a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, titled “NIGERIA UPDATE: Onwards to the future.” In his message, he reflected on his history with the APC, noting that as a founding member, he cherished the moments spent collaborating with fellow party members to form the party in 2013. He had hoped that his personal values would continue to align with those of the APC for the duration of his political career.

However, he expressed disappointment, stating that recent developments over the last two years indicated a lack of interest from the current leadership of the APC to address the party’s unhealthy situation. Despite his attempts to voice his concerns both privately and publicly, he feels that the party’s direction has become increasingly erratic.

El-Rufai recognized that while founders have an emotional connection to the institutions they helped create, pragmatic decisions must be made when fundamental disagreements arise. He acknowledged his efforts to support the APC and contribute to its success, particularly during the successful elections of 2015, 2019, and 2023, but noted that the party has deviated from its original vision, treating its members poorly in recent times, which he finds unacceptable.

On March 10, 2025, he submitted his resignation letter to his local party ward in Kaduna, effective immediately. Prior to making this decision, he consulted with mentors, colleagues, and supporters to evaluate his future. He has now chosen the SDP as his new political platform for upcoming engagements.

He emphasized that, as a part of the SDP, he aims to work alongside other opposition leaders and parties to create a unified democratic front to contest against the APC in future elections through 2027. El-Rufai called on supporters and those invested in Nigeria’s future to join the SDP in their mission to make Nigeria a source of pride for Africans and the global Black community.
