Edo Governorship Tribunal Dismisses Petitions Against Governor Okpebholo
In a significant development, the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed petitions filed by the Action Alliance (AA) and the Accord Party, challenging the election of Governor Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) .
The tribunal, sitting in Abuja, struck out the petition filed by AA and its candidate, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, citing a lack of merit and frivolity. Similarly, the Accord Party’s petition was dismissed due to inconsistencies in their claims and failure to provide meaningful evidence to substantiate their allegations of electoral malpractices .
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Governor Okpebholo the winner of the governorship election with 291,667 votes, defeating his closest opponent, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,655 votes.
The tribunal’s ruling has reaffirmed the validity of Governor Okpebholo’s election, conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act. As the tribunal continues to deliver judgments on pending petitions, including the one filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the people of Edo State await the final outcome with bated breath.
