BREAKING 2027: Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Dump Parties, Join NDC in Major Political Shakeup
The race for Nigeria’s 2027 presidency just got hotter. Former Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi and NNPP’s Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso have officially defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), setting the stage for a new power alliance.
The move comes just hours after Obi announced he was leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Both political heavyweights say the switch is to position themselves for their 2027 presidential ambitions.
Obi and Kwankwaso were welcomed at the NDC headquarters in Abuja by the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas.
Party leaders are already framing the defections as proof of momentum. According to Dickson and Cleopas, Obi and Kwankwaso joining signals a “growing wave of confidence in the NDC nationwide.”

This double defection puts NDC in the spotlight as a potential “third force” platform ahead of 2027. Both Obi and Kwankwaso pulled millions of votes in the 2023 election, and combining their structures under NDC could reshape the opposition landscape.

NDC gains instant national recognition but must absorb two massive political movements.
APC and PDP now have a bigger threat outside their traditional bases.
Two of Nigeria’s most popular 2023 presidential candidates are now under one roof. With Peter Obi and Kwankwaso in NDC, the 2027 election just became far less predictable.
The NDC just went from fringe party to major contender overnight. If they can manage the egos and ambitions of two frontrunners, Nigeria could see its most serious third-party challenge yet.
