Presidency Rebuts Claims on Tinubu’s June 12 Role
The Presidency has strongly refuted allegations made by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Lamido claimed that Tinubu supported the annulment, but the Presidency has described these claims as “false” and “revisionist.”
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency defended Tinubu’s legacy and emphasized that Lamido’s remarks distort Nigeria’s democratic history. The statement also highlighted the role of Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Mogaji, who never aligned with any pro-annulment movement.
The June 12 presidential election is a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history. Its annulment remains a contentious issue, and the Presidency’s response underscores the importance of accuracy in historical narratives.
The Presidency’s rebuttal of Lamido’s claims serves as a reminder of the need for accuracy and truth in discussing Nigeria’s history. As the country’s leaders navigate complex historical narratives, it is essential to prioritize fact-based discourse and avoid revisionism.
