PDP Defections: A Blow to the Party’s Strength?

The recent defections of two governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have sent shockwaves through the Nigerian political landscape. The move has sparked concerns within the PDP, with the party’s governors’ forum chairman expressing worry about the trend.

The Defections

Mbah’s Defection: One of the governors, Mbah, announced his defection on Tuesday, and his move was immediately welcomed by the APC leadership.
– Diri’s Exit: Barely 24 hours later, another governor, Diri, confirmed his exit from the PDP in Yenagoa, citing “obvious reasons”.

Remaining PDP Governors

Despite these defections, eight PDP governors remain in the party. They include:
-Adamawa:Ahmadu Fintiri (North-East)
– Bauchi: Bala Mohammed (North-East)
– Plateau:Caleb Mutfwang (North-Central)
– Taraba: Kefas (North-Central)
– Zamfara: Dauda Lawal (North-West)
– Oyo:Seyi Makinde (South-West)
– Rivers: Siminalayi Fubara (South-South)
– Osun:Ademola Adeleke (South-West)

The defections have unsettled the PDP, with the party’s governors’ forum chairman, Bala Mohammed, expressing concern over the growing number of governors and senior party figures crossing to the APC. He admitted that the defections had unsettled the party, though he said efforts were ongoing to keep it united ahead of the November 15-16 national convention in Ibadan.
