Obasanjo Sets the Record Straight: No Third-Term Ambition
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has categorically denied allegations of seeking a third term in office, insisting that no Nigerian can provide evidence to support such claims. Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Obasanjo emphasized his capability to achieve his goals, stating, “I’m not a fool. If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it.”
Obasanjo compared the alleged pursuit of a third term to securing debt relief for Nigeria during his presidency, which he described as a far more daunting task. “If I wanted to get debt relief, which is more difficult than getting a third term and I got it, if I wanted a third term, I would have got it too,” he said. This statement underscores his confidence in his ability to achieve his objectives when he sets his mind to it.
Dangers of Indispensability
Obasanjo also cautioned against leaders who believe they are indispensable, describing such a mentality as a “sin against God.” He emphasized the importance of leadership renewal, stating that the best leadership comes from young, vibrant, and dynamic individuals. “When you are ‘kuje kuje’ (weak and frail), you don’t have the best,” he added .The former president highlighted the need to rethink democracy in Africa, taking into account the continent’s unique cultural and historical context. He advocated for reforms that promote inclusivity, accountability, and good governance, stressing that democracy is not just about elections but also about serving the people .
