Nigeria’s House of Representatives Holds Emergency Session on National Security

The House of Representatives in Nigeria recently convened a special plenary session to address the country’s escalating national security challenges. The session, which was attended by a delegation from St Kitts and Nevis and officials from the United States Embassy, aimed to review the current security situation and develop a comprehensive plan to tackle the growing threats

During the session, the House is expected to receive a consolidated Internal Assessment prepared by relevant committees, including security incidents, trends, oversight findings, and implementation of previous resolutions. The assessment will inform evidence-based presentations by committees on defence, national security and intelligence, police affairs, human rights, interior, foreign affairs, women affairs, youth development, and emergency and disaster preparedness

At the end of the session, a formal resolution is expected to be adopted, outlining agreed actions, timelines, and oversight mechanisms to address the security challenges. The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty is not negotiable, while also acknowledging the country’s longstanding relationship with the United States

The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, announced that the House intends to pass legislation that prohibits ransom negotiation and imposes penalties on public officials involved in unauthorized amnesty or ransom deals. The House also hopes to establish a national framework for disarmament and reintegration

Nigeria’s security challenges have drawn international attention, with the US Congress holding a public hearing on President Donald Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). The hearing highlighted the growing concern over Nigeria’s security situation and the need for urgent action
