Kaduna State Government Supports Released Protesters with ₦100,000 and Smartphones

In a move aimed at rehabilitating and empowering individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests, the Kaduna State Government has provided ₦100,000 and smartphones to the 39 protesters recently released from detention. Governor Sani Uba’s decision is part of a broader initiative to help these individuals reintegrate into society and make positive changes in their lives.

According to Abdulkadir Meyere, the Secretary to the State Government, the governor has promised further assistance, including startup capital for some, vocational training for others, and even employment opportunities for those who show a commitment to turning their lives around. The state is also planning to track the progress and behavior of the released individuals, ensuring they adhere to acceptable standards before receiving the full range of benefits.

The released protesters, who had been part of demonstrations across Nigeria in August against worsening economic conditions, were given medical evaluations and psycho-social counseling. Religious leaders from both Islamic and Christian faiths also offered guidance, encouraging the individuals to avoid negative influences and embrace the teachings of their respective religions to improve both their personal lives and their communities.

The protests, which initially began peacefully, escalated into violence in some regions, leading to property damage and confrontations with security forces. Months later, some protesters were charged with multiple offenses, including treason, which sparked public outrage, particularly when it was revealed that some of those arrested were minors. This led President Bola Tinubu to intervene, ordering the release of the detainees.

The Kaduna State Government has taken steps to ensure the released individuals are closely monitored. Their contact details, including addresses and phone numbers, have been recorded to facilitate tracking. This initiative aims to ensure that those who have been given a second chance can build a better future for themselves and contribute positively to society.

While the release of the protesters marks a turning point, it also signals the state’s commitment to offering rehabilitation and support to those who have engaged in protest actions, as long as they are willing to change their ways.
