Crisis Deepens in PDP as Factions Hold Parallel Meetings

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn, with two factions holding parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The factions, loyal to Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, are laying claim to the leadership of the party following a fiercely contested national convention in Ibadan on Saturday .

The party’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Iliya Dambo Anyanwu, confirmed that security operatives were invited to maintain law and order and prevent any intruders from disrupting the meeting. “It is the PDP’s usual practice to call in security personnel whenever a meeting of such magnitude is scheduled, in order to maintain law and order,” he said .

Despite the controversy, both factions are proceeding with their meetings. The Kabiru Turaki-led leadership has alerted authorities to an alleged plot by Wike’s loyalists to disrupt party activities. Turaki insisted that Wike’s loyalists lacked legitimacy following their expulsion in Ibadan .

The crisis within the PDP raises questions about the party’s ability to resolve its internal differences and move forward. With both factions claiming legitimacy, the situation is likely to continue to escalate unless a resolution is reached .
