APC Gains Strength as Four PDP Senators Defect

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed four new senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), increasing its strength in the Senate to 70 members. The defecting senators are Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Oluwole Olubiyi (Osun Central), Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), and Samson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South).

The defection has altered the composition of the Ekong and Bassey defections have changed the Senate’s party dynamics. The current composition stands at APC 70, PDP 28, Labour Party 5, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) 1, Social Democratic Party (SDP) 2, and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) 1.

The senators cited various reasons for their decision to leave the PDP. Aniekan Bassey’s resignation letter mentioned that his defection was due to the prevailing political developments in his constituency and within the party structure, which he felt had been “fractured beyond redemption.

The defections are seen as a significant blow to the PDP, particularly in Akwa Ibom State, where the party was previously considered strong. On the other hand, the APC is expected to consolidate its control in the region. The APC’s gain in numbers could impact the balance of power in the Senate and influence future legislative decisions.
