Akwa Ibom Governor Slams PAs for Downplaying Salaries

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has rebuked his political aides for trivializing their wages in public. He revealed that his Personal Assistants (PAs), who are the lowest-ranking political appointees, earn a minimum of ₦1 million monthly. Governor Eno made this statement during a town hall meeting, where he also promoted one of his PAs, Blessed Essien, to Special Assistant (SA) on Public Works.

Governor Eno expressed surprise that some of his aides were claiming to earn low wages despite receiving substantial salaries. He emphasized that a PA to the governor of a state cannot be ordinary and that ₦1 million is a significant amount of money. The governor also announced plans to publish the names of all political appointees according to their local government areas in the newspaper.

The governor tasked the people to hold their PAs and other appointees accountable for their actions. He encouraged the public to ask their PAs, Special Assistants, and Commissioners about their achievements and contributions to the community.

The governor’s remarks come at a time when the government is considering a review of the salaries of political and elected officials. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has proposed a salary review that would see top government officials, including the president and governors, receive a substantial pay rise.
