ADC Convention: INEC Approval Mandatory, Says Former Commissioner
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) risks facing sanctions if it proceeds with its convention without the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) approval, according to Prof. Lai Olurode, a former INEC National Commissioner.
Olurode emphasizes that INEC’s presence as an observer is mandatory for the convention to be legitimate. “It would be imprudent for the ADC to go ahead with its convention without INEC’s endorsement,” he warns.
The ADC had declared it would proceed with its congresses and national convention despite being derecognized by INEC. Party officials argue they’ve followed due process.
As creations of the state and Constitution, political parties require INEC’s recognition. Without it, the ADC risks being labelled an unlawful organisation.

Will the ADC heed Olurode’s warning, or will it push ahead with its convention? The outcome remains uncertain.
