El-Rufai Breaks Silence on Relationship with Tinubu
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has clarified that he never had a personal relationship with President Bola Tinubu. In a recent interview on Trust TV, El-Rufai explained that his support for Tinubu’s 2023 presidential bid was driven by party loyalty and political arrangements, rather than friendship.
El-Rufai stated that he was approached by Islamic stakeholders from the southwest to support the emergence of a southwest Muslim presidential candidate. This, he said, shaped his involvement in the early discussions that later favored Tinubu. According to El-Rufai, the zoning understanding within the All Progressives Congress (APC) after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure made a southern presidency inevitable.

El-Rufai also highlighted the philosophical differences between him and Tinubu, stating that their views on governance are fundamentally different. “The philosophy of this government is contrary to everything I’ve been taught as a Muslim, a northerner, and a Nigerian. They came to govern the cake, to enrich themselves. We are different people, parallel lines that will never meet,” El-Rufai said.
El-Rufai’s comments have shed light on the rumored rift between him and Tinubu. The former governor’s statements suggest that their relationship is strictly transactional and centered around politics, rather than personal friendship.
