Rivers Assembly Speaker, 16 Lawmakers Defect to APC
In a shocking turn of events, Martin Amaewhule, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Amaewhule was joined by 16 other lawmakers who cited the crisis in the PDP as the reason for their departure .
Amaewhule stated that the division in the PDP was the main reason for his defection. He expressed his happiness in joining the APC, saying it would enable him to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration .
With the defection, the APC now has 17 members in the House, while the PDP is left with 10 members. Sylvanus Nwankwo of Omuma constituency has been appointed as the Minority Leader .
The defection is expected to intensify political tensions in Rivers State, which has been struggling with factional disputes within the PDP. The party has yet to respond to the development .
