The High Cost of Presidential Trips: A Call for Accountability
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, labeling them “excessive” and “disturbing”. According to the ADC, President Tinubu has embarked on 40 international trips in just 26 months, spending a cumulative 181 days abroad, equivalent to almost six months. This accounts for nearly 25% of his time in office, setting “a new record for any Nigerian or African leader in recent memory” .
The ADC questions the justification for these trips, given the significant financial costs involved. With billions of naira spent per day and per trip, the party argues that such expenses are wasteful without tangible economic or diplomatic gains. To put this into perspective:
– N2.3 billion spent on foreign trips in six months (February-July 2024)
– N36 billion spent on international travels in 2024, exceeding the total spending during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s four-year administration
The ADC highlights the stark contrast between the president’s priorities and the pressing domestic challenges facing Nigeria. With:
30 Nigerians losing their lives daily to insecurity
and malnutrition affecting millions
(only 13 out of 36 states)
The party argues that leadership at home is needed more than ever, and the president’s frequent absences could fuel damaging rumors and erode public confidence .
The ADC urges President Tinubu to reassess his priorities and focus on addressing Nigeria’s pressing domestic issues. By doing so, he can restore public trust and demonstrate a commitment to the welfare of his citizens. As the party aptly puts it, “Nigeria deserves a president who is present”.
