Okpebholo Inaugurated as Edo State Governor, Vows to Focus on Citizens’ Welfare

On November 12, 2024, Monday Okpebholo was officially sworn in as the new governor of Edo State, succeeding Godwin Obaseki after his eight years in office. The ceremony took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, marking the beginning of Okpebholo’s leadership two months after securing the governorship position as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okpebholo, accompanied by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, took the oath of office around 12:55 pm. The two leaders then made their way through the stadium in an open vehicle, greeting the cheering crowd of supporters.

In his inaugural speech, Okpebholo expressed deep gratitude to the people of Edo State for entrusting him with the responsibility of governance. He emphasized that his victory was a win for democracy and pledged to honor the trust placed in him. “You have given me the mandate to lead our state, and I promise not to betray that confidence. The well-being of our citizens will always be my top priority,” he said.

The new governor laid out his vision for the next four years, which includes bolstering state security, enhancing road infrastructure to better connect local communities, and fostering economic development, particularly by supporting small businesses.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, alongside APC governors, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, and former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, among others.

Okpebholo’s victory in the September 21, 2024, election marked a significant moment for the APC as he defeated Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 291,667 votes to Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party candidate, placed a distant third.

This result was especially important given the internal political dynamics in the state. The election highlighted ongoing tensions within the ruling party, particularly the strained relationship between Obaseki and his former deputy, Philip Shuaibu, and Oshiomhole’s continuing influence in Edo politics. Despite Obaseki’s support for Ighodalo, the PDP was unable to secure a win, paving the way for Okpebholo’s ascendancy.

The PDP, however, has raised concerns about the election’s fairness, alleging irregularities and stating that the true will of the people was not reflected. The party has announced plans to challenge the election results in court.

Okpebholo’s swearing-in marks the start of a new political chapter for Edo State. With a clear commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the people, he and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, have promised to lead with integrity and remain loyal to the trust of the citizens.
