Tragic Accident in Awka: Police Inspector Shot Dead by 10-Year-Old Son

A heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at around 9:40 p.m. in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria. Inspector Okolie Amechi, a police officer, was shot dead by his 10-year-old son, Dominion Vincent, in an accidental discharge incident while on duty at Polaris Bank.According to an internal police wireless message, Dominion Vincent was playing with his father’s weapon, unaware of its state, and pulled the trigger from behind his father. The bullet fatally hit Inspector Amechi in the spine and also struck his youngest brother, 6-year-old Emmanuel, in the back and right hand.Both victims were rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital, Awka, where Inspector Amechi was pronounced dead on arrival. Emmanuel is currently receiving treatment and responding well.Unfortunately, this incident highlights the importance of gun safety and proper handling. There have been other cases of police officers being involved in shooting incidents, such as the case of Inspector Samuel Ugor, who was shot dead by a colleague in Abia State in 2022, following an argument .
