Tragedy in Abuja: NYSC Member Abdulsamad Jamiu Killed in Crossfire During Robbery Response

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of serving corps member *Abdulsamad Jamiu* during a robbery response operation in Abuja. He was killed in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, FCT.

According to Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations for Headquarters Guards Brigade, troops from the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they got a distress call about an armed robbery in the area.

“Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange,” Odunola said in a Sunday statement.

During the shootout, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by soldiers to secure the area and save lives, he died from his injuries.

“This heartbreaking loss has cast a deep shadow over all personnel of the Guards Brigade,” Odunola added.

The Commander, Guards Brigade, along with officers and soldiers, has extended condolences to Jamiu’s family, the NYSC, and all affected by the tragedy.

A thorough investigation is now underway to establish exactly what happened. The Army says findings will be made public once complete.

Odunola described the situation as “fluid and volatile” as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents. He reaffirmed the Guards Brigade’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the FCT.

He also said operational procedures would be reviewed to enhance civilian safety during future responses. Residents have been urged to stay calm and cooperate with security agencies.
