Tinubu Under Pressure: SERAP Demands Reversal of Petrol Price Hike and Probe of NNPC
President Bola Tinubu is facing mounting pressure from Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to take immediate action against the recent increase in petrol price and alleged corruption in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In a statement, SERAP urged Tinubu to direct NNPCL to reverse the “illegal and unconstitutional” price hike within 48 hours and probe the allegations of corruption and mismanagement, including the spending of $300 million ‘bailout funds’ and the $6 billion debt owed to suppliers.
SERAP argued that the price increase violates constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations, exacerbating poverty and inequality. They emphasized that Tinubu’s government has a legal obligation to protect socio-economic rights, probe corruption, and ensure access to justice.
The organization threatened to take legal action if their demands are not met, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency in the oil sector. Will Tinubu heed SERAP’s call and take decisive action to address the plight of Nigerians? Only time will tell.
