Shiites Demand Release of Detained Minors

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has accused the Tinubu government of detaining over 60 minors in a Nigerian police unit, sparking widespread outrage. The group claims these minors were arrested after a violent attack on their procession in Abuja on March 28, 2025.

The Incident

According to IMN’s legal representatives, Bala Dakum and Yushau Uthman, the incident occurred during the group’s annual International Quds Day commemoration. Thousands of Shi’ite Muslim faithful were peacefully marching in the Banex area of Wuse II, Abuja, when armed soldiers suddenly opened fire without provocation.

Demand for Release

The IMN has vowed to pursue legal action if the Nigerian government and army fail to release the detained members, including the minors. This development has raised concerns about the treatment of minors in custody and the broader implications for human rights in Nigeria.

In a similar case, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) intervened in the detention of minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests, ordering the police to transfer the case files to his office. The AGF directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation to bring the adjournment date forward, sparking debates about the role of government in protests and detentions .

The IMN’s demand for the release of the detained minors highlights the need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s law enforcement and judicial systems. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these allegations and the potential implications for human rights in the country.
