Senate Responds to Senator Natasha’s Suspension: A Case of Gross Misconduct?

The Nigerian Senate has finally broken its silence on the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that her six-month suspension was due to gross misconduct and not because of her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio

According to the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Natasha’s suspension was a result of her persistent acts of misconduct and disregard for the Senate Standing Orders. This clarification was made in a letter read by the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Honorable Kafilat Ogbara, during a press briefing in New York

A Brief Background

Senator Natasha had taken her case to the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), accusing the Senate President of sexual harassment and claiming that her suspension was a result of her allegations ². The IPU has promised to take necessary steps to address her complaints after listening to the other side.

The Senate’s Position

The Senate has maintained that Senator Natasha’s suspension was not related to her allegations of sexual harassment. Instead, they claim that her behavior was unacceptable and warranted disciplinary action

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the IPU will respond to the Senate’s clarification. One thing is certain, however: the outcome of this case will have significant implications for women in politics and the fight against sexual harassment in Nigeria.
