Rogue Vessel Returned to Owners by Navy Following Plea Bargain

In a recent development, the Nigerian Navy has decided to return the Very Large Crude Carrier MT Heroic Idun to its owners after reaching a plea bargain agreement. The vessel had been apprehended and repatriated from Equatorial Guinea to Nigeria in November of the previous year. Following this decision, the 26 crew members of the ship, hailing from India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Poland, have been released, and their passports have been returned to them.

Background:
Last year, the Nigerian Navy took custody of the MT Heroic Idun, a significant crude carrier, and transferred it back to Nigeria from Equatorial Guinea. However, in a turn of events, a plea bargain agreement was brokered between the vessel’s owners and the Nigerian Government earlier this year. Consequently, the crew members were detained at the NNS Pathfinder Naval Base while facing prosecution at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice.

Captain Mohammed Adamu, a representative of the Nigerian Navy, confirmed that the owners of the vessel had fulfilled all the stipulations outlined in the plea bargain agreement. As a result, the government agreed to withdraw all charges against the crew members. Passport Return:
In addition to the vessel’s release, another significant development is the return of the passports belonging to the crew members. Now that the charges have been dropped, the authorities have returned their passports, effectively restoring their freedom to travel and ensuring their rights are respected.
