Rivers Women Demand Reinstatement of Suspended Governor Fubara

Hundreds of women in Rivers State took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Friday, April 11, 2025, to demand the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. The protesters, who described themselves as mothers and wives, appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu to lift the suspension on Governor Fubara ¹.

Reasons Behind the Protest

The women’s protest was sparked by President Tinubu’s suspension of Governor Fubara, citing the governor’s inability to control pipeline vandalism and militant activities in Rivers State. Additionally, a deep-seated political deadlock between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, has paralyzed governance in the state ¹.

Protest Details

The protesters marched through major streets in Port Harcourt, carrying placards with bold inscriptions such as
Bring back Fubara
Save our democracy
Is the law different for Rivers State?
God of justice, arise for Rivers State
Fubara is our mandate

Respect the will of Rivers people

Demands and Concerns

The women lamented what they referred to as “unconstitutional military rule masked as a state of emergency” and insisted that the people of Rivers State deserve better than what they termed an undemocratic arrangement. They accused political actors of attempting to subvert the democratic choice of the electorate

 Impact and Implications

The suspension of Governor Fubara has significantly impacted the governance of Rivers State, creating a governance vacuum as elected officials are no longer in charge. This has potentially undermined the state’s ability to address local issues effectively ¹.
