Payment Delay Impacts Nigerian Civil Servants and Military Personnel: May Salaries Affected”

In recent news, an unexpected delay in the payment of May 2023 salaries has hit Nigerian civil servants and military personnel employed by the Federal Government. Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have encountered challenges in obtaining debit approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), leading to the unfortunate delay. This article delves into the details surrounding this issue and sheds light on the implications faced by the affected employees.

Reports indicate that several civil servants have voiced their concerns about the non-payment of their salaries for May 2023. The delay stems from the fact that MDAs have not yet received debit approval from the CBN, causing a ripple effect across various sectors. This setback has affected not only civil servants but also military and para-military personnel, amplifying its impact on the overall workforce.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) addressed the matter directly through a memo to its employees. The memo, signed by the acting General Manager of Administration, Oluwasola Awe, acknowledged the delay and explained that it was a widespread issue extending beyond FAAN. According to the memo, the delay was attributed to glitches in the CBN’s portal, preventing the timely processing of salary payments. Despite the inconvenience caused, the management of FAAN expressed gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of its employees during this challenging period.

Confirming the situation, a source from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation stated that accounts of MDAs had been frozen, leading to the inability of the CBN to debit the necessary funds for salary disbursement. While further details regarding the account freezing were not disclosed, it is evident that this circumstance has contributed to the prolonged delay in salary payments.

The unexpected delay in the payment of May 2023 salaries has adversely affected Nigerian civil servants and military personnel. Due to challenges faced by MDAs in obtaining debit approval from the CBN, the timely processing of salary payments has been disrupted. This delay extends to various sectors, creating a challenging situation for employees awaiting their salaries. As the relevant authorities work towards resolving the glitches in the CBN’s portal and addressing the account freezing issue, affected individuals are encouraged to remain patient and understanding during this difficult period.
