Nigeria’s FIRS Announces NIN as Automatic Tax ID For Nigerians : What You Need to Know

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will now serve as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians. This development aims to simplify tax administration, reduce duplication, and promote fairness in the tax system .

No Separate TIN Required: Nigerians with a valid NIN do not need to obtain a separate TIN.
Unified Tax System: The NIN will unify all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by FIRS and state internal revenue services into a single identifier.
Businesses: Registered companies will use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number as their Tax ID .
Taxable Income: Only individuals with taxable income are required to have a Tax ID, while students, dependents, and those without income are exempt .

The FIRS explained that the new system is designed to simplify taxpayer identification, eliminate duplication, and close loopholes for tax evasion. With over 123.9 million Nigerians already issued a NIN as of October 2025, the agency expects a seamless transition to the unified Tax ID system .

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), scheduled to take effect in January 2026, mandates the use of Tax ID for specific transactions. The FIRS assured Nigerians that the reform is aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and fairness in tax administration, without imposing unnecessary hardship .
