Kogi State’s Misplaced Priorities: N172 Million on Celebrations, Zero on Flood Control

A recent review of Kogi State’s budget performance document for the first quarter of 2025 has raised eyebrows over the state’s allocation of funds. Despite the looming threat of flooding, the state government spent a staggering N172 million on celebrations and remembrance days, while allocating zero funds to erosion and flood control. This is not the first time Kogi State has been criticized for underfunding critical sectors. In 2024, the state allocated a meager N29.8 million to erosion and flood control, and in 2023, the amount was even at the event.

With a budgetary allocation of N1.15 billion for erosion and flood control in the 2025 fiscal year, one would expect the state government to prioritize this critical sector. However, the fact that no funds were spent on flood control during the first quarter is alarming, given the potential risks and consequences of flooding.

The stark contrast between the state’s spending on celebrations and its neglect of flood control raises questions about the government’s priorities. While celebrations and remembrance days are important, they should not come at the expense of critical sectors that impact the lives and livelihoods of citizens.

Kogi State’s misplaced priorities highlight the need for a rethink in budget allocation. The government must prioritize critical sectors like flood control and erosion management to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. By doing so, the state can mitigate the risks associated with flooding and promote sustainable development.
