IGP Orders Demobilization of Police Mobile Force Officers on Health, Compassionate Grounds

Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has approved the mass demobilization of several Inspectors and rank-and-file officers from Police Mobile Force units nationwide. The move affects personnel across 20+ PMF squadrons and cites “health and compassionate grounds.”

An internal police signal dated May 18, 2026, with reference _CH:5660/DOPS/PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.89/196_, was issued by the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters, Abuja. The directive was sent to Commanding Officers of PMF squadrons in locations including Keffi, Ibadan, Yola, Ilorin, Abeokuta, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Ikeja, Asaba, Ado-Ekiti, Lokoja, Gusau, Zaria, Oghara, Ikorodu, Shendam, Takum, Obudu, Okene, and Ilaro.

According to the memo, signed on behalf of the AIG Operations, the affected officers are to be demobilized from the PMF and redeployed to their respective state commands.

The Police Mobile Force is the tactical and anti-riot arm of the Nigeria Police Force, often deployed for counter-insurgency and internal security operations. The demobilized officers include:

Sample of affected personnel:
INSPR Ibrahim James– 16PMF to Kogi State
INSPR Garba Shehu. 19PMF to Rivers State
W/INSPR Osi Fatimo- 2PMF to Lagos State

Over 20 inspectors were listed, with redeployments spanning Kogi, Rivers, Lagos, Plateau, Benue, Bayelsa, Yobe, Adamawa, Edo, Imo, Ondo, Kwara, FCT, Delta, and Ekiti states.

Demobilization on “health and compassionate grounds” suggests the Nigeria Police Force is addressing welfare concerns within its tactical units. The PMF operates under high-stress conditions, including riot control and anti-banditry operations. Moving officers back to state commands can aid recovery and family support.

This also signals ongoing personnel audits under IGP Tunji Disu’s leadership as the Force reviews deployment fitness across squadrons.

The IGP’s order prioritizes officer welfare by moving PMF personnel facing health or personal challenges to less demanding roles in their home commands. It reflects a shift toward balancing operational needs with compassionate postings.
