IGP Demands Strict Punishment for Corrupt Officers Involved in Extorting Nigerians
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the actions of some police officers allegedly involved in extorting money from Nigerians. The IGP has directed that any officers found guilty of such misconduct face “severe” consequences as part of a broader effort to ensure accountability within the force.
In a public statement released on Friday, November 8, by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the IGP referred to a specific case involving officers stationed at the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa. The officers in question—ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine—were accused of extorting a significant sum of N10 million from a group of young Nigerians.
Fortunately, thanks to the swift intervention of the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16, the stolen funds have been recovered. The accused officers have been arrested, and an internal investigation through an orderly room trial is underway.
The IGP’s statement underscores the police force’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and that officers engaging in corrupt practices will be dealt with decisively. The ongoing efforts to root out corruption are a key part of ensuring that the Nigerian police force is trusted by the public.
