EPL Title Race Heats Up: Guardiola Stays Cautious After Man City Edge Arsenal 2-1
Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City’s crucial 2-1 win over Arsenal has only given them “hope” in the Premier League title fight. Despite closing the gap to three points with a game in hand, the City boss says the Gunners are still top.
City would leapfrog Arsenal for the first time in 2026 if they beat struggling Burnley on Wednesday. But Guardiola isn’t celebrating yet.
| Club | Points | Games Played | Goal Difference |
| Arsenal | Top | 33 | Better |
| Man City | 3 behind | 32 | Lower |
“Who is the top of the league? We are not. Who has the better goal difference?” Guardiola said post-match. “Step-by-step. But of course, we’ve got hope to still extend the chances to fight in the league.”
Even with a win at Burnley, City would only be level on points with Arsenal and five games left to play.
It was a tight game of fine margins at the Etihad on April 19, 2026:
opened with a sensational solo run and finish to put City 1-0 up.
equalized almost immediately after charging down a Gianluigi Donnarumma clearance.
struck the winner 25 minutes from time.

Arsenal were wasteful. They hit the post twice in the second half, once before and once after Haaland’s goal. Havertz also missed two clear chances that could have changed the game.
Though Haaland scored the winner, Guardiola singled out Bernardo Silva for praise in the week the midfielder announced he will leave City at season’s end after nine years.
“You have to write the word legend in capital letters for him, not for today but for every single game during nine years,” Guardiola said. “He is a special player. Wherever he will go, the team will be sorry.
The win makes City favourites for a seventh league title in Guardiola’s 10 seasons. Momentum is clearly with Manchester. Arsenal have now lost their last four games in all domestic competitions, including the League Cup final to City last month.
City are three points back with a game in hand, but Guardiola knows the job isn’t done. Arsenal still lead and hold the goal difference edge. The next five games decide everything.
