Celebrating 50 Years of ECOWAS: A Milestone in Regional Integration

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marked a significant milestone on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, with the ceremonial signing of a commemorative card to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The event was attended by notable leaders, including former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and President Bola Tinubu.

General Gowon, the only surviving leader among the original signatories of the ECOWAS treaty, was specially honored for his pioneering role in promoting regional integration. The event was held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where the original treaty was signed in 1975.

The Presidents of Liberia, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau, who attended the event, jointly issued a declaration reaffirming their commitment to the founding ideals and aspirations of ECOWAS. This declaration underscores the organization’s continued relevance and importance in promoting regional cooperation and development.

The 50th anniversary of ECOWAS is a testament to the enduring legacy of regional cooperation in West Africa. As the organization looks to the future, its leaders are committed to building on past successes and addressing new challenges to promote economic growth, stability, and prosperity in the region.
