CBN Warns Against Naira Abuse: No Cash Bouquets This Valentine’s Day

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated its stance on currency abuse, warning Nigerians against using Naira banknotes to create decorative items such as bouquets, towers, or cakes. This warning comes ahead of the 2026 Valentine’s Day celebrations, where such practices have become increasingly popular.

According to the CBN, using banknotes to design decorative items such as bouquets, money towers, or cash cakes constitutes currency abuse and is illegal under Nigerian law. This includes folding, pinning, or otherwise misusing banknotes.

Offenders who engage in these practices could face a minimum of six months’ imprisonment, a fine of at least ₦50,000, or both. The CBN has urged Nigerians to treat the Naira with dignity and avoid decorative or festive use that alters its physical state.

With the ban on cash bouquets, Nigerians are advised to explore alternative gift options that do not involve abusing the Naira. Some ideas include:

– Traditional flowers
– Digital transfers
– Non-currency gifts
– Heartfelt notes
– Experiences.

The CBN’s decision to ban cash bouquets is aimed at maintaining the integrity of the Naira and preventing its misuse. The apex bank has emphasized that protecting the currency is a shared responsibility and has urged Nigerians to report cases of Naira abuse.
