Benue Massacre: A Devastating Attack on Yelwata Community

A brutal attack was launched on the Yelwata community in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, leaving scores dead and homes in ruins. The suspected herdsmen launched a coordinated assault late Friday night through the early hours of Saturday, claiming over 100 lives.The assailants split into two groups, with one targeting the local police station and the other moving house to house, slaughtering residents and setting buildings ablaze. Graphic images and videos captured the aftermath, showing charred remains of children, burnt houses, and smoldering farmland.Casualties and Losses
Death Toll: Over 100 lives lost, with 40 corpses recovered from one home alone.
Family Losses: A local pharmacist’s brother lost 15 family members, while other families were wiped out, with some losing up to five relatives.
Over 200 bags of rice, valued at about ₦25 million, were destroyed by the gunmen.

Amnesty International condemned the carnage, describing it as one of the deadliest mass killings in Nigeria in recent years. Residents lamented the lack of security presence and government response during and after the incident.

The Niger Delta Congress strongly criticized the federal government, stating, “In Nigeria today, human life is now valued less than crude oil.” Calls for justice and decisive action continue to mount across the country .
