Akwa Ibom State is betting big on tourism. Governor Umo Eno says the new international flight from Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo to Accra will turn the state into a major travel hub for West, Central, and Southern Africa.
The governor spoke on Sunday after returning from the historic maiden trip to Ghana, calling it a key step in building a tourism-driven economy.
“We are priming our state as the tourism hub of our region from air, land and sea. We are meeting our benchmarks and our targets and we are sure we will get there. Today we are strategically building an economy around tourism,” Eno said.
He explained that the new Accra route is just the start. More international connections are coming, and they’ll help position Akwa Ibom as a top destination.
“This maiden flight and subsequent flights to designated destinations across the West, Central and Southern Africa will help position us as a destination of choice,” he added.
The state government has been pushing infrastructure to match the ambition — from Ibom Air’s expansion to upgrades at Victor Attah International Airport. With Accra now on the map, Uyo joins Lagos and Abuja as Nigerian cities with direct West African.
Flights to other West, Central, and Southern African cities are planned.
Uyo to be promoted as gateway to beaches, cuisine, culture, and business.
Aviation, hotels, transport, and tour services set to benefit from increased traffic.
Akwa Ibom isn’t waiting for tourists to find it it’s flying to meet them. With the Uyo-Accra maiden flight, Gov Umo Eno is pitching the state as West Africa’s next tourism and business hub.
