ADC Calls for Suspension of 2025 Tax Laws Over Alleged “Forgery”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate suspension of the 2025 tax laws signed by President Bola Tinubu, citing alleged “forgery” of key provisions. According to the party, a forensic review of the original laws and gazetted versions revealed significant discrepancies, including deleted accountability provisions and inserted clauses granting coercive powers to the executive .

The ADC alleged that the government inserted provisions that grant the executive the power to arrest individuals and seize property without court approval. This, the party claims, is a clear breach of the principle of separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the alleged actions as “a criminal mindset of a government that has no ethical boundaries” .

The ADC has called for a full investigation into the alleged forgery and the immediate prosecution of any government official found culpable. The party believes that allowing such actions to stand would undermine the rule of law and democracy .

The suspension of the tax laws is seen as necessary to preserve the principle of separation of powers and to prevent the executive from usurping legislative authority. The ADC’s position is supported by other opposition leaders, including Peter Obi, who have also criticized the alleged insertions in the laws .

The ball is now in the court of the Federal Government, which must respond to the ADC’s demands. The National Assembly is expected to conduct a full review of the tax laws and determine the extent of the alleged alterations .
