2027 Election Candidates Emerge: Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Jonathan Make the List as INEC Timetable Faces Court Battle
Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is taking shape fast. Despite a court ruling that questioned INEC’s powers, major parties have picked candidates ahead of the May 30 deadline. From Tinubu and Atiku to Obi, Jonathan, and Sowore, the field is already crowded — but legal uncertainty could shake things up.

INEC set April 23 to May 30, 2026, for all party primaries and candidate nominations. Campaigns for president and National Assembly were slated to start August 19, 2026.
But a Federal High Court judge, Mohammed Umar, nullified key parts of that timetable. He ruled INEC cannot dictate when parties hold internal primaries. According to him, the Electoral Act 2026 only lets INEC receive notices, monitor primaries, and collect candidate details — not set dates.
The judge said Section 31 gives parties 90 days before an election to swap candidates, and INEC can’t cut that short.
INEC disagreed. It appealed the ruling and filed for a “stay of execution” so the timetable stays active while the case moves to the Court of Appeal. Another judge, J.K. Omotosho, had earlier backed INEC’s power to issue and adjust election schedules.
The appeal will decide if the current schedule stands for 2027.
Parties didn’t wait for the court case. Most conducted primaries before the May 30 cut-off. Here’s who’s flying their party’s flag:
Goodluck Jonathan | Not INEC-recognized after Supreme Court voided their NWC convention |
Peter Obi hasn’t officially emerged in this cycle yet, but he’s still widely expected to run and remains a key name in 2027 conversations.
PDP is the biggest question mark. Two factions held parallel primaries:
Wike/Mohammed faction INEC recognizes this group. They picked former senator Sandy Onor. Onor accepted and is campaigning.
Turaki faction:Ratified Goodluck Jonathan as candidate on May 30 after police blocked their Abuja venue. INEC doesn’t recognize them because the Supreme Court voided the convention that produced their NWC.
Until the party reunites or courts rule, PDP’s 2027 candidate remains contested.
INEC’s appeal will determine if parties must stick to the April 23–May 30 primary window or can reschedule.
Even with primaries done, Section 31 lets parties replace candidates up to 90 days before the election. That keeps the door open for last-minute changes.
INEC’s timetable holds, presidential campaigns start August 19, 2026. Governorship campaigns begin September 9, 2026.Tinubu, Atiku, Jonathan, Sowore, Makinde, and others now have party tickets, but INEC’s authority is under legal fire. The Court of Appeal’s decision on INEC’s timetable could reset dates, reopen primaries, or validate everything done so far.
