Widow Takes Oath of Office After Husband’s Assassination
Grecia Quiroz, the widow of Carlos Manzo, the anti-narcotics mayor of Uruapan, Mexico, has been sworn in as the new mayor after her husband’s tragic assassination. Manzo was shot dead on November 1 during a public event, sparking widespread outrage and protests.
Quiroz vowed to continue her husband’s fight against organized crime, despite federal authorities allegedly ignoring his repeated pleas for help. Manzo was known for his aggressive campaign against drug trafficking groups and regularly denounced their activities.
Uruapan is a city located in the heart of Mexico’s avocado-producing region and has been plagued by cartel violence. The city is a hotspot for criminal activity, with powerful groups like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and La Nueva Familia Michoacana operating in the area.
Quiroz will serve as mayor until 2027, completing the term her husband won in the 2024 election. The Mexican government has announced a new security deployment for Michoacan, increasing federal forces in the state to combat the growing insecurity .
