Whistleblower Exposing Wike’s Land Scandal Faces Query and Detention
A Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) staff member, Hassan Mairiga, has been slammed with an official query after exposing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s alleged multi-thousand hectare land allotment to his own sons in Abuja. Mairiga was detained for eight days before receiving the query, which gives him 72 hours to respond and explain why he shouldn’t face disciplinary action for unauthorized disclosure of official documents .
The leaked documents reportedly revealed that Wike allocated over 1,700 hectares of Abuja land to his sons, Jordan and Joaquin, sparking widespread controversy. Mairiga’s actions as a whistleblower were met with swift retaliation, including detention based on a forged court order, according to rights activist Omoyele Sowore .Mairiga’s detention was allegedly orchestrated by Wike’s Chief Security Officer, ACP Mohammed Iya Musa, using a fake court order. After Sowore’s intervention, Mairiga was released, but the query issued by the FCDA’s acting Director of Land Administration, Uzo Udegbunam, demands that he respond within 72 hours .
Wike has denied the allegations, attributing them to a disgruntled politician from Adamawa State. His administration maintains that Jordan Farms and Estates Limited, the company allegedly involved, is a registered entity with no connection to Wike’s children
The case highlights the challenges faced by whistleblowers in Nigeria and the need for transparency and accountability in governance. Mairiga’s bravery in exposing corruption has sparked a national conversation about land allocation and abuse of power in the FCT .
