US Imposes New Travel Restrictions on Nigeria and 14 Other Countries
The United States government has expanded its travel restrictions to include Nigeria and 14 other countries, citing concerns over “demonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing” that threaten US national security and public safety .
The countries newly added to the partial restrictions list include:
– Nigeria
– Angola
– Antigua and Barbuda
– Benin
– Côte d’Ivoire
– Dominica
– Gabon
– The Gambia
– Malawi
– Mauritania
– Senegal
– Tanzania
– Tonga
– Zambia
– Zimbabwe
These countries will face heightened vetting and limits on specific visa categories .
Full Restrictions on Additional Countries
In addition to the partial restrictions, the US has imposed full restrictions on five countries:
– Burkina Faso
– Mali
– Niger
– South Sudan
– Syria
Individuals holding Palestinian Authority-issued travel documents are also subject to full restrictions. Laos and Sierra Leone, previously under partial restrictions, are now subject to full restrictions .
The restrictions include exceptions for:
– Lawful permanent residents
– Existing visa holders
– Certain visa categories like athletes and diplomats
– Individuals whose entry serves US national interests
The White House justified the expansion by citing “persistent and severe deficiencies” in the screening and information-sharing practices of the designated countries. The administration aims to prevent the entry of foreign nationals about whom the US lacks sufficient information to assess the risks they pose .
