US Embassy Warns Citizens Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja
The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to its citizens ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025. The protest, organized under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, aims to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The protest is expected to draw large crowds to Eagle Square and the Central Business District, with demonstrators marching towards the Aso Rock Presidential Villa. Activist Omoyele Sowore announced the protest on October 9, describing it as a “historic” and peaceful demonstration.
US Embassy Advisory
The US Embassy has cautioned its citizens that the protest may lead to disruptions and potential violence. In a statement, the Embassy advised US citizens to
Steer clear of Eagle Square and the Central Business District
Severely limit movement throughout the city on Monday, October 20
Monitor local media, keep a low profile, and be alert in public places
The Embassy also recommended that children stay home from school and domestic staff who commute from outside Abuja stay off the roads.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody since June 2021, facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The protest aims to secure his release, with organizers describing his detention as unjust.
