Unusual Medical Case: Surgeons Remove 29 Spoons, 19 Toothbrushes, and Pens from Patient’s Stomach
In a shocking medical case, surgeons in Hapur, India, have successfully removed 29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens from the stomach of a man. The patient, who had been admitted to a de-addiction center, was rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.
The surgery was led by Dr. Shyam Kumar, who described the moment as “shocking” due to the sheer number of items found in the patient’s stomach. The team had to carefully remove the items one by one to prevent injury to vital organs.
The patient, who had been feeling mistreated and deprived of food at the rehabilitation center, had reportedly swallowed the objects as a desperate act of self-injury. After the successful operation, the patient has been discharged and is now stable and recovering.
This is not the first time such a case has been reported. In 2022, 63 spoons were recovered from the stomach of a patient in UP’s Muzaffarnagar, and in 2019, a team of doctors in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi recovered spoons, screwdrivers, toothbrushes, a kitchen knife, and a door latch from the stomach of a man suffering from a major mental disorder.
The case highlights the importance of providing proper care and support to patients in rehabilitation centers. It also underscores the need for medical professionals to be aware of the potential for self-inflicted harm in patients with mental health issues. The successful removal of the objects from the patient’s stomach is a testament to the skill and expertise of the medical team involved.
