University of Calabar Sends Hundreds of Students Home Due to Over-Admission
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has sent hundreds of students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery home due to over-admission beyond the approved quota by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council. This decision was made by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Banku Obi, during a meeting with the students and their parents on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
The university admitted more students than the quota given by the Medical Council of Nigeria, leading to the current crisis. The students, who have paid millions in tuition fees, accommodations, and other charges, are now being asked to go home until the university sorts out the over-admission issue .
The affected students are outraged, demanding justice and a reversal of the decision. One student lamented, “There’s a huge injustice going on in the University of Calabar Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery.” Another student added, “The school out of greed admitted a lot of students in that faculty as against the quota given to them by the Medical Council of Nigeria” .The students from 200 to 600 levels have been asked to go home with their parents until further notice. This decision has sparked confusion and tension among the students, who are awaiting a resolution to the crisis .
The situation at UNICAL highlights the challenges faced by universities in Nigeria, particularly with regards to admission quotas and regulatory compliance. It remains to be seen how the university will resolve this crisis and ensure that the students receive the education they deserve.
