Tragedy Strikes Enugu Community as Catholic Priest is Brutally Murdered

A devastating incident has shaken the Enugu community with the tragic murder of Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, a Catholic priest. The cleric was shot dead by unidentified men along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area on Friday, September 20, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, who were riding a motorcycle, intercepted Fr. Eya’s vehicle and opened fire, killing him instantly. The attackers reportedly deflated his tires, forcing the vehicle to stop, before approaching and shooting him multiple times at close range.

The Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, confirmed the tragic development, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement, he described the incident as a “tragic death” and urged the faithful to remain ardent in prayer during this period of anguish.

 

Fr. Eya hailed from Ugbaike, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state. At the time of his death, he served as the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu.

The authorities have yet to apprehend the perpetrators, and an investigation is likely underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the priest’s murder. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for increased security measures to protect citizens .
