Tinubu Govt Secures Court Order Barring #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest
The Federal Government of Nigeria has secretly obtained a court order restraining human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and others from staging the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest near key locations in Abuja, including the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and the National Assembly complex.
The court initially refused to grant the government’s ex parte request, but later granted the order privately after summoning the government’s counsel into his chambers. The order restrains Sowore, the Take It Back Movement, RevolutionNow, and other unidentified persons from holding or mobilizing any protest around key locations in Abuja.
The government’s decision to seek a last-minute court order has sparked controversy, with many questioning the motives behind the move. The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest is aimed at demanding justice and the immediate release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, whose prolonged incarceration has stirred national and international concern.
The situation is unfolding rapidly, and it remains to be seen how the government and the protesters will respond to the court order. Will the protesters heed the court’s decision, or will they find ways to express their demands peacefully? Only time will tell.
