TikTok Restricts Late-Night Live Access for Nigerian Users Amid Safety Investigation

TikTok has temporarily restricted access to its LIVE feature for users in Nigeria during late-night hours, citing an ongoing safety investigation. The restriction, which was implemented from 11pm to 5am, affects creators with at least 1,000 followers, preventing them from hosting LIVE sessions or viewing LIVE broadcasts from other countries .

The restriction is believed to be connected to increasing reports of inappropriate activities on late-night live sessions, including explicit content and adult-themed shows. TikTok has taken action against such content, banning 49,512 live sessions in Nigeria in the second quarter of 2025 .

Despite the disruption, creators who earn through LIVE gifting have their balances and previous earnings intact, easing concerns of financial loss. However, the restriction may affect creators who rely on live streaming for income, as nighttime sessions typically generate substantial engagement and revenue .

The development comes weeks after TikTok released updated safety statistics for West Africa, highlighting its efforts to ensure platform safety. The company has taken action against over 2.3 million live sessions and 1 million creators globally for violating guidelines .

The restriction may impact the way Nigerian creators use the platform, particularly during late-night hours. While some users welcome the move as a necessary measure to curb exploitation, others are concerned about the economic impact on legitimate creators who rely on the platform for income .
