The Case for Electronic Transmission of Election Results in Nigeria

The Case for Electronic Transmission of Election Results in Nigeria

The debate over electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria has sparked intense discussion. I’m unequivocally in support of e-transmission, believing it can significantly enhance the credibility of elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been uploading result sheets to the IReV portal since the 2022 Ekiti governorship election. This practice has been successful, with results typically available on the portal by the evening of an Election Day.

Despite this, there are concerns that the Senate has removed “electronic transmission of results” from the Electoral Act. Critics argue this move undermines democracy and could compromise the integrity of future elections.

E-transmission ensures transparency, reduces disputes, and gives voters confidence their votes count. It’s a step forward in Nigeria’s democratic.
