Super Eagles Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye Handed Two-Month Ban for Illegal Betting

Nigerian international and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been suspended for two months for illegal betting. The ban, which will run from August 18 to October 19, 2025, means Okoye will miss the start of the new Serie A season.

The ban stems from suspicious betting activity flagged during Udinese’s match against Lazio on March 11, 2024. Investigators found that bets placed on Okoye receiving a yellow card resulted in significant winnings, raising red flags. Okoye and three friends were placed under investigation and referred to the disciplinary commission.

While Okoye could have faced a four-year suspension for sporting fraud, the authorities opted for a lesser charge of illegal betting. Okoye was found guilty and handed a two-month ban. During his suspension, Udinese will turn to Razvan Sava as the first-choice goalkeeper.

The ban will see Okoye miss six Serie A matches, including Udinese’s Coppa Italia tie against Carrarese on August 18. Okoye, who has earned 18 caps for Nigeria, will return to action on October 19, 2025. This suspension may impact his chances of playing for Nigeria in upcoming matches and could affect his overall performance.
