Soyinka Slams “Excessive” Security Escort for Seyi Tinubu

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has expressed concern over the large security escort accompanying President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu. Speaking at the 20th Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Awards, Soyinka urged President Tinubu to reconsider the scale of security personnel attached to his son, stressing that such resources are urgently needed elsewhere to combat insurgency, kidnappings, and rural attacks

Soyinka described a recent encounter in his hotel room, where he witnessed an “excessively large security battalion” assigned to Seyi Tinubu. He said the entourage was “sufficient to take over a small country” and expressed astonishment that a child of the head of state would require such a heavy security presence .

Soyinka urged President Tinubu to prioritize national security needs over personal interests. He humorously suggested that if a major insurgency were to break out, perhaps Seyi Tinubu should be asked to “go and handle it” with his large security escort. However, Soyinka emphasized that beyond the humor lies a serious matter of priority and fairness .
