Senate President Akpabio Urges Niger Delta Youths to Reject Pipeline Vandalism

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on youths in the Niger Delta region to shun crime and adopt constructive approaches to drive regional development. Akpabio made this appeal at the two-day Niger Delta Oil and Gas Investment and Security Summit held in Calabar.

He highlighted the importance of utilizing existing laws, such as the Petroleum Industry Act and the Local Content Act, to promote progress and development in the region.

The Senate President encouraged individuals and organizations to invest in the oil and gas industry, noting that this could create opportunities for growth and development. He emphasized that the people of the Niger Delta should take advantage of the existing laws and frameworks to drive local content realization.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Gas, Ekpirikpe Ekpo, highlighted the federal government’s investments in the sector, including the gas-to-methanol plant in Bayelsa. He emphasized the strategic position of Cross River State for attracting methanol projects and creating jobs.

Ekpo also warned that oil theft and pipeline vandalism threaten investor confidence and undermine the growth of the oil and gas industry. He called for collective efforts to protect the region’s oil and gas assets and promote security.

Dr. Chinedu Ogwus, Regional Director of Africa Robotics and Autonomous Systems, attributed the region’s challenges to poor leadership and weak justice systems. He urged investment in youth development and technology, noting that this could reduce insecurity and foster growth.
