Rivers Assembly Foils Plot to Block Fubara’s Impeachment Proceedings
The Rivers State House of Assembly has uncovered a plot to obtain a court order blocking the legislature from performing its constitutional functions. The assembly alleges that certain individuals are attempting to procure an ex parte order from a Rivers State High Court sitting outside Port Harcourt, the state capital .
The assembly cited Sections 272(3) and 188(10) of the Constitution, which state that the House has the jurisdiction to determine the question of whether the term of office of a governor or deputy governor has ceased or become vacant. The Constitution also provides that no proceedings or determination of the House shall be entertained or questioned in any court .
The Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. The assembly has called on the affected office holders to respond to the notice of allegations served on them .

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Dr. Enemi George, stated that the alleged plot to stop the proceedings is dead on arrival and would amount to an attempt to subvert the Constitution. He urged those behind the move to exercise restraint and refrain from actions inimical to the Constitution and the rule of law .
The assembly has vowed to continue with the impeachment proceedings, and it remains to be seen how the alleged plot will unfold. One thing is certain, however: the Rivers State House of Assembly is determined to assert its constitutional powers and ensure that the rule of law is upheld .
