The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has emphasized the importance of reintroducing agriculture in Nigerian schools as a core part of national efforts to strengthen food security and economic stability. Speaking at the General Assembly of Farmers in Abuja, Shettima stressed that agriculture should be taught not only as an academic subject but also as a culture that shapes the mindset of young Nigerians .
Shettima advocated for every school to have functional farms and for agriculture clubs to be revived to teach students the value of food production, land use, and agribusiness. He emphasized that this approach would help young Nigerians understand the significance of agriculture in the country’s development .
The Vice President also highlighted the need to change the long-held perception of farming as a low-status occupation. He described this perception as harmful to Nigeria’s food security and national development, calling on leaders and institutions to be directly involved in agriculture .
Shettima urged national institutions, such as the Army, Air Force, Navy, NYSC, and paramilitary agencies, to sustain institutional farms, not as charity, but as a responsibility. He emphasized that leadership must be directly invested in productive farming, rather than governing agriculture from conference rooms alone .
By reintroducing agriculture in schools and promoting it as a nation-building profession, Nigeria can take a significant step towards strengthening its food security and economic stability. As the country’s leaders work towards this goal, it is essential to prioritize agriculture and provide young Nigerians with the skills and knowledge needed to drive the sector forward .
